Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently got diagnosed with diverticulosis on my ascending colon, but I felt a dull pain in my lower left abdominal and some constipation. Is that normal?

Answered by Dr. Ajeet Kumar

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Although right side diverticula (ascending colon) are rare, they are benign condition which does not need a special treatment or surveillance except to increased fiber intake to relieve constipation which is thought to be a precipitating factor in the development of the diverticula in the large bowel.

Diverticula, unless inflamed, a condition called diverticulitis, does not cause pain. It may be pain due to constipation if you have this problem or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), causing pain and constipation.

To understand and establish the reason for your symptoms, I need you to tell me how long you feel this discomfort? Do you think that this discomfort goes away once you pass wind or stools? And do you have significant constipation, meaning passing less than three bowels in a week, or passing hard, lumpy, hard stools, or strain so much while passing stools?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have been feeling these symptoms for the past month and constipated for more than 20 days. I do have bowel movements once a day, but it is lumpy (rippon like).

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Then the stools seem to be fine. Ribbon like or snake pattern stools are otherwise normal forms of stools. I think you can take tablet Mebever (Mebeverine HCl) 200 mg once daily half an hour before meals (as per need). Meaning the day you feel discomfort, you can take it and not on a regular basis.

This is an anti-spasmodic medication that would control pain and discomfort secondary to large bowel muscles' spasms. Plus, add Ispagol husk of tablespoon full daily in a glass of water. And take plenty of water daily, approximately two to three liters a day. And lastly do some regular exercise, a brisk walk for 40 to 45 minutes in a day. It is also helpful to keep you physically fit and your bowel clean.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
