A stray dog bit me few hours back. What to do next?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

A stray dog bit me a few hours back. I washed the wound with soap and water. And I took tetanus from a pharmacy. What to do next? Any food which I should not eat during this period?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You did a very good job of washing with soap and water. It is important to apply a soap that foams well to wash off local viruses.

An anti tetanus vaccine will only protect you against wound infections. It will not prevent rabies infection. If the dog is infected, you may be at risk of having rabies infection.

You need to take a course of anti-rabies vaccination. It comprises five doses.

Day 0 (on the day of exposure), and then days 3, 7, 14, 28. This is necessary to ensure protection against rabies infection. Go to the nearest health care facility at the earliest and start the vaccination.

There are no food restrictions.
