Do I need an injection for a dog bite?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 20 years old. I was playing with my friend's dog yesterday. By mistake, the dog's teeth touched my hand, and a little drop of blood came out.

Do I need an injection?

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If your friend has vaccinated the dog, then there is no problem. Keep the bitten site clean, wash with warm water and soap. Apply Oxygenated water and Betadine (Povidone Iodine) locally.

You can purchase them over the counter, and a prescription is not required. As you are 20 years old, and if you are still getting your scheduled vaccines, then there is no need for another Tetanus injection.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
