Is it common to have an unpleasant taste after five days of dry socket treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

It has been five days since I got dry socket treatment. Though the pain is coming down, there has been a real bad taste in my mouth for the last few days, and it does not seem to be getting better. Can you please tell me if this is expected?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Do not worry. Usually, it takes time for a dry socket to heal, maybe around one to two weeks, so it is expected to take more time and have a different taste.

If prescribed, I suggest you take the medications and do warm saline rinses six-hourly a day for seven days. If no relief is there, you can take the medications I am suggesting and update me about the relief and drug allergy if any.

Treatment plan

Tablet Augmentin 625 mg (Amoxicillin 500 mg and Clavulanic acid 125 mg) twice a day for five days. Tablet Aclofenac 100 mg, if needed.

Preventive measures

Avoid eating hot food.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I will wait patiently for the taste to get back to normal, as that is not much of an issue. Luckily the pain is under control, and I have been doing the saline rinses four times a day and continue with that.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please carry on the precautions and update me after 10 to 15 days if the taste remains unpleasant.
