Is smoking advisable a few days after an extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wisdom tooth and two other teeth were extracted a few days ago. The clot has got dislodged. No incision was required during the procedure, and I do not even need pain relievers. However, I can see new tissue forming and wanted to know if I have a dry socket. I followed all the post-operative instructions. Am I safe from the dry socket, and can I smoke?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Getting three teeth removed at a young age is not good. A dentist will never advise you to smoke, but if everything is alright, you can smoke one or two times per day for at least a week if you do not want any further complications.

The pain from a dry socket usually occurs between three to five days. Since you are free from the above symptoms, you have fewer chances of developing a dry socket. I suggest you maintain good oral hygiene. Add salt to lukewarm water and gargle.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
