Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Currently, I have a pretty burst of pain in my left ears while having a hiccup and a big yawn. There is a very slight pain in my left ear but I notice it when I really think about it. Before a month, I ruptured my left eardrum. I was tubing in a lake and the tube got flipped out. I hit the water hard and after that, I started to have pain and loss of hearing immediately in my ears. I went to the urgent care and the doctor told me that I have a small hole due to a rupture of the eardrum. She told me that it does not seem to be major and it can heal on its own. I use earplugs and keep them dry. It seems to be healed now. After a week, I went to the dentist. I did a normal cleaning and an X-ray was taken. I was told that I have three wisdom teeth to get extracted. After two days, I got a bad jaw or TMJ or ear pain on the right side opposite to the site of the previously ruptured eardrum. It hurt me a lot and at times I felt them in the lower jaw. I went back to the dentist and the doctor told me that while cleaning some bacteria can go down the gums. Then she advised me to do saltwater rinsing a few times a day and gave me a Penicillin. Currently, I am on the last day of taking Penicillin and the pain is completely gone on my right side. Yesterday, I got a sharp pain in my left ears while having a hiccup or yawn. Is the pain back in my left ear? Do I need to be concerned? Do I need to visit an ENT specialist in person? I hope that it will go on its own but it is definitely a pretty strong pain-causing difficulty to yawn and hiccups.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the history, you can have a referred pain from the gums or pain can be due to increased pressure in the eustachian tube. Ear pain is really excruciating. For now, there is nothing to be worried. You can take tablet Paracetamol 500 mg and Ibuprofen 400 mg one tablet while having pain. You can do steam inhalation to get relief from eustachian tube blockage. Do not blow your nose forcefully. Prevent having entry of water into the ears as you have perforations and it can lead to otitis media. If you have ear discharge and fever, you can take antibiotic ear drops.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
