Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My wife had an ectopic pregnancy seven months ago. Through a surgery right side fallopian tube was removed at that time. Now what kind of treatment does she need to avoid ectopic pregnancy again?

Please suggest.

Answered by Dr. Megha Tuli

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Actually, there is no treatment or medicine to prevent ectopic pregnancy. Only thing to look for is to avoid using copper-T for contraception as this may increase the chance of ectopic pregnancy in case you conceive. Take care to get an early ultrasound, as soon as you discover pregnancy next time. Also there is high chance of around 10 to 15% to get your next pregnancy too as ectopic. No process or medicine is available presently to prevent this condition.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Her ectopic pregnancy and surgery was around seven months back. Is it safe to get pregnant now? Or do we wait for few months? Are the tests such as HSG and others necessary before getting pregnant? Can ectopic pregnancy occur due to blockage of fallopian tube? Is there any option to prevent it?

Answered by Dr. Megha Tuli

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is as such no recommendation regarding when to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy. But two to three months after surgery is a reasonable enough time. As it is already been 7 months you can try for a baby now. 10-15% women with ectopic pregnancy will have chances of recurrence. But do not worry as many women conceive and have healthy pregnancy even after ectopic. I have seen plenty of such cases. Unfortunately there is no way or procedure to prevent another ectopic pregnancy.

Whereas HCG and tests are concerned. It is extremely vital in your case that you get your blood HCG tests done along with transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) to diagnose the location of pregnancy as soon as your urine tests are positive for pregnancy. Tubal blockage as such does not cause ectopic pregnancy, rather tubal blockage causes infertility. Tubal motility and other physiological problems cause ectopic pregnancy, factors of which cannot be controlled or anticipated.

Hope everything turns out well for you this time.
