How to control eczema flare-ups without medicines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I have eczema, and recently it has been looking like it gets better, but then all of a sudden it flares up again. I wanted to ask for advice on what I can do to help with healing and overcoming this. I researched steroids and TSW, so I want to stay away from steroids or drugs.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Eczema can flare up due to several reasons. The key is to maintain a proper skin barrier by hydrating your skin to avoid allergen entry. Follow these tips.

  • You should avoid using harsh soaps and detergents.
  • You should use a gentle cleanser for cleaning, and you should apply a bland, hypoallergenic moisturiser (no fragrance, no phthalates, no parabens) within two to three minutes.
  • Always try to keep your skin moisturised. Dry your skin by patting or with a soft, clean towel.
  • Some people have a specific type of allergy, like some foods- like eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans- if you feel that certain food is causing flare-ups, you should avoid that.
  • Certain types of clothes - woollen clothes can cause itching, so do not wear them directly (wear them over cotton clothes).
  • Clean your curtains or carpets regularly, and change bedsheets. These are some things that you can do to avoid flare-ups.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
