Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an active 31-year-old male and I have been dealing with a number of issues related to numbness, fatigue, weakness, weak hands, shaking, burning mouth, and random pains in my body. I went to a neurologist to get a bunch of tests. I tested positive for ANA specifically for DNA (DS) antibody which was 15 IU/ml. Does this imply that I have lupus? I am a little scared and just looking for some answers and help. I am currently taking Xanax 0.25 once a week.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The symptoms you have may occur due to various reasons commonly fibromyalgia or multivitamin deficiencies. The classical symptoms of lupus are fever, oral ulcers, photosensitivity rash, joint pain, swelling, kidney problems, alopecia, etc. ANA (antinuclear antibodies) can be positive due to various reasons, maybe because of drugs. ANA can also be positive in the normal population. Low titer ANA is seen in 30 percent of the normal population. Anti-ds DNA is specific for lupus. But its level varies from lab to lab. Usually, it is called negative if less than 30 IU/ ml. So you need to do ANA via IFA (indirect fluorescent antibody) method with titer. Also, other blood tests to conclude anything. Presently it is not suggestive of lupus. It needs to be correlated with clinical features. I hope this helps.

Thank you.
