Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am suffering from piles. So I recently done the whole abdomen ultrasound and got to know fatty liver grade I. I want to know is it life-threatening? Or is there any medication to improve and come back to a normal healthy liver? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Fatty liver is not a life-threatening condition, but in some cases, it may gradually progress to chronic liver disease. So it needs some attention. Now treatment depends whether you also have any liver damage due to fatty liver. So you should undergo liver function tests, and also you will need sugar level and lipid profile. Because all these three issues go hand in hand and affect each other. Now, if lipid profile or sugar is deranged then you will need treatment on that line.

Now best treatment for fatty liver is weight loss, as it is similar to fat deposition elsewhere in the body. No medications will definitely help you losing fat so a healthy lifestyle is the best solution. If there is liver damage on blood tests then you will need to take vitamin E supplements to control liver damage. So get all these tests done and now focus on weight loss.

Your BMI at present is around 29, and try to achieve it less than 24 at least. So have a healthy lifestyles like avoiding fatty oily and high-calorie food. Have light dinner and regular exercises like brisk walking. Alcohol is strictly contraindicated and so are the unnecessary medications that might damage the liver.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

How much weight should I reduce? I have already started exercise as 1000 steps of skipping and cycling each day. Is that fine or more required and in how much time should I expect it to be normal?

My LFT and rest are normal. About food, shall I quit ghee completely and milk also? Shall I stop having dinner?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Ideal BMI (body mass index) would be less than 23, so equivalent weight will be around 73 to 74 kg. So try to achieve it or at least a few kilograms around it. It may take at least a few months, around four to five months.

You should give up ghee but may have a low fat milk. You may skip dinner and replace it with some salads if necessary. You should add some brisk walking and jogging as you tolerate it, to your existing regime.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
