Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 55-year-old mother has arthritis, and she has been under medication for the past three years. She is also anemic. Recently, we found in a scan that she has a fatty liver. Is that due to the medication she takes or the diet she is having? I think she is taking too much oil in her diet. But what should be done to reduce the swelling in her liver?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Fatty liver is likely due to taking extra calories from food, there is no FDA ( Food and Drug Administration)-approved medicine so far. The best treatment for fatty liver is to reduce weight, walk, and cut down daily calorie intake, it should be around 2000 kcal of energy every day, try to cut it down to 1500 for her. This will reduce her weight and improve her fatty liver too. Vitamin E capsule is frequently used in fatty liver, it can improve liver enzymes but weight reduction is the only long-term treatment. Regarding her anemia, make sure, she is not using NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) category of painkillers, which can cause gastritis and slow blood loss leading to anemia.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
