Can drug allergy cause symptoms like fever and stomach pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had stomach pain since ten days after taking an alpha blocker for prostatitis. I have taken only one capsule, Alfuzosin 10 mg. However, I have stomach pain and fever that is not subsiding since then. Also, the skin on my fingers is getting peeled.

Kindly advise.

Hello.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

There are two possibilities for your symptoms. Either a drug reaction or allergy, or prostatitis itself that is causing fever. However, if the symptoms have started after taking medicine, it can be a drug allergy. You must not take medication for the rest of your life. I suggest the below treatment plan for your symptoms:

  • Tablet Pantoprazole (proton pump inhibitor) 40 mg once daily half an hour before breakfast.
  • Syrup Gaviscon 10 ml (Sodium Alginate and Sodium Bicarbonate) 10 ml after food. (These medicines will help relieve acidity).
  • Anti-allergic tablets like Fexofenadine.

I suggest you get liver function tests to rule out liver inflammation. Fever generally subsides if it is a mild drug reaction.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response.

Where can I get the liver function tests done? Also, which local doctor should I consult?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

A liver function test is a simple blood test to check for liver inflammation. As you have had prostatitis for two years, fever is not due to prostatitis. I suggest you consult an internal medicine consultant who will take a detailed history, do a complete physical examination, and can suggest some tests to guide in the diagnosis of your problem.
