Can drug allergy cause symptoms like fever and stomach pain?

Hello doctor,

I have had stomach pain since ten days after taking an alpha blocker for prostatitis. I have taken only one capsule, Alfuzosin 10 mg. However, I have stomach pain and fever that is not subsiding since then. Also, the skin on my fingers is getting peeled.

Kindly advise.

There are two possibilities for your symptoms. Either a drug reaction or allergy, or prostatitis itself that is causing fever. However, if the symptoms have started after taking medicine, it can be a drug allergy. You must not take medication for the rest of your life. I suggest the below treatment plan for your symptoms:

Tablet Pantoprazole (proton pump inhibitor) 40 mg once daily half an hour before breakfast.
Syrup Gaviscon 10 ml (Sodium Alginate and Sodium Bicarbonate) 10 ml after food. (These medicines will help relieve acidity).
Anti-allergic tablets like Fexofenadine.

I suggest you get liver function tests to rule out liver inflammation. Fever generally subsides if it is a mild drug reaction.

A liver function test is a simple blood test to check for liver inflammation. As you have had prostatitis for two years, fever is not due to prostatitis. I suggest you consult an internal medicine consultant who will take a detailed history, do a complete physical examination, and can suggest some tests to guide in the diagnosis of your problem.
