What are the risks of having uterine fibroids during gestation in a 28-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 28 years, and I have a 1.18 inch uterine fibroid. Will it start growing once I conceive? Will it cause severe and unbearable pain during gestation? What are the risks if I conceive?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Uterine fibroids, in most cases, continue to grow in size, but of course, they are dependent on various contributing factors. A 1.18 inch uterine fibroid should not contribute any complications to pregnancy, although you will have to be under a doctor's supervision, as this would be a pregnancy risk. Still, at this size (1.18 inch), there should be nothing to worry about. So your pregnancy should, in all certainty, go as it usually would; the pain and gestation should be as is commonly experienced by every other woman.

The only risks involved are miscarriage and premature delivery, but these are usually seen with a much larger uterine fibroid, not a 1.18 inches one. But it is still best to be under the supervision and to take extra precautions. Your doctor shall take all the necessary steps for the same.

I hope you find my response helpful.

Kind regards.
