Which anesthesia works better for a fibula fracture repair?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a fibula fracture and am having surgery coming up. I want to know what procedure is better for a nervous person, twilight with nerve block or general anesthesia? Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The fibula is the lower leg bone. For that usually, they will give anesthesia called spinal anesthesia, in which injection is given to your spine at your lower back. It is simple, and pain-free surgery can be done. Only your two legs will have anesthesia, the rest of the body will have senses- you can see, feel, and talk, and everything will be normal after four to five hours. As your legs lose anesthesia, you will start feeling them.

If you are terrified and having anxiety, you can ask for spinal anesthesia and sedation so that you can happily sleep. General anesthesia for this surgery is not a good option, because it will anesthetize the full body and you will be connected to an artificial ventilator which will support your breathing.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
