What filariasis prevention tips should I follow?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Two of my neighbors are infected with elephantiasis. I am afraid as mosquitos are frequent in our area.

Please suggest me the measures of prevention.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Filariasis is transmitted by the Culex mosquito. So, I appreciate your knowledge that you know filariasis is transmitted by mosquito bites.

The most efficient first step for prevention is to avoid mosquito bites by using personal protection measures. Use skin cream available for preventing mosquito bites. Also, mosquito nets, mosquito tablets, etc., can be used.

If your neighbor is getting proper treatment with medication, then the chance of infection to others is less. If filariasis is more prevalent in your area, chemoprophylaxis with Ivermectin plus Albendazole or DEC (Diethylcarbamazine) may be given.

Microfilaria is released in the blood at night, so it has a nocturnal periodicity.

Consult a physician for examination if needed. The diagnosis can be done by peripheral smear examination. Other methods are the filariasis card test and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) testing for filaria antigen detection.

I hope this helps you.

Take care.
