Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a peculiar problem. I do not gain weight at all. I have tried all through my young age. I am 51 years old and still weigh only 41 Kg. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Anyone whose BMI (body mass index) is below 18.5 is classified as underweight, and your BMI is 15.62. There are a lot of causes for being underweight, and it could be:

  1. Genetic.
  2. Metabolic.
  3. Hyperthyroid.

If you check your thyroid function test and blood sugar and are normal. Here are some healthy ways to gain weight:

  1. Eat more frequently.
  2. Choose nutrient-rich foods.
  3. Watch when you drink. Some people find that drinking fluids before meals blunts their appetite.
  4. Make every bite count. Snack on nuts, peanut butter, cheese, dried fruits, and avocados. Have a bedtime snack, such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a wrap sandwich with avocado, sliced vegetables, and lean meat or cheese.
  5. Exercise, especially strength training, can help you gain weight by building your muscles. Have an occasional treat. Even when you are underweight, be mindful of excess sugar and fat.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
