What causes stomach pain, bloating, and mucus when empty?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have frequent gnawing pain when stomach is empty, which is relieved after eating. There is a continuous mucus accumulation in the throat throughout the day, which obstructs proper breathing and flares the nose nostril followed by dry mouth. It is particularly in the early morning hours. If light food is taken at dinner, discomfort in the stomach during midnight and whole body feels dry and no proper bowel movements the next morning. Most of the time, stomach gets bloated after eating. When the stomach is empty, nose flares up and breathe is very abnormally hot.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I completely understand your concerns.

Your symptoms are consistent with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease, a chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, the tube connecting your mouth and stomach). This acid reflux irritates the lining of the esophagus and can cause uncomfortable symptoms or complications over time.

  • In this condition, the junction of the esophagus and stomach becomes weak, and therefore, stomach acid moves up into the esophagus (Helicobacter pylori infection).

  • The most common cause for this is a hiatus hernia(occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity through an opening called the hiatus, normally where the esophagus passes through to the stomach), in which there will be an opening in the diaphragm. The esophagus becomes loose, which allows the upper portion of the stomach to move into the chest.

  • Kindly consult a gastroenterologist to get an online prescription.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
