Could you please advise whether the lesions seem to be scarring from past genital warts or if there is a possibility of recurrence?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my genital warts removed a few months back. I have attached the photographs that were taken on the same day. It might look slightly different due to the lighting. Please let me know whether this is a scar or a recurrence. Different doctors have different opinions about this and I am confused. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

According to the pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) sent by you, my opinions are as follows:

  1. Some lesions look bumpy and could resemble warts (that may have been missed during removal or would have grown back), and some look slightly depressed (which gives an impression of scarring due to treatment).
  2. The best way to confirm this is to get a dermoscopic examination done. It is a very simple imaging technique that can tell you the type of skin lesions and you will receive the results soon. After that, the lesions that are due to warts can be treated accordingly through electrocautery, chemical cauterization, cryotherapy, laser, etc.

I hope this helps. Do get back if you have any further queries.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause could be a viral infection.

Investigations to be done

I suggest you do a dermoscopy.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I have one more question. Can follicular inflammation occur in hairless areas? The area in the picture looks like it is slightly scratched. I hope it is not herpes. Is it? Kindly help.

Answered by Dr. Shama Naaz

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Glad to have you back.

It does not appear to be herpes to me. In herpes, there will be multiple fluid-filled blisters in the affected area and it will be associated with burning pain. The lesions then become ulcerated with a yellow base. Your lymph nodes will get swollen in herpes. This lesion could be an excoriation mark.

I wish you good health. Do get back if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
