Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have lived in a tropical country for a year. I have a parasitic infection in my intestines frequently. It is most probably giardiasis. The symptoms I have include yellowish stools, frequent bowel movement that is not too watery, and nausea. I am cautious with my food and water intake. I use boiled water and do not eat any salads. I follow all guidelines to avoid any contamination. I have lived in another tropical country and seldom had this kind of infection. I need to take a tablet of Secnidazole, one dose of 2 grams every month, to eliminate this problem. Is there any problem taking this medicine frequently? Do you have any other solution, something that can be done without medicines?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed your case history, I have a few important points to mention. Giardiasis is a common infection in tropical countries, and you were already treated for it. So not every loose stool is because of this, until and unless proven. The type of stools you mentioned, can be infective or non-infective. Hence, you must check your stool detailed report before using any medicine. You are using it once a month, so there are no issues of over-dosing. But an important point is whether you need it. The next time, whenever you have loose stools, check the stool detailed report. If positive for giardiasis or any other parasites, you can take medicine. Consult your physician and take medicines accordingly. Otherwise, use probiotics for a few days and you will be fine. Continue the general precautions for your diet, which you are already following.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
