Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 45 years old, and my body hair and eyebrows are turning gray. However, I am not having blood pressure issues or other body problems.

1. What tests should I take?

2. What medications should I take to treat this condition?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Graying of hair is a natural process. Age, genetics, and vitamin deficiencies are the common reasons behind hair graying. Although some medical conditions do cause graying, they mostly have a genetic origin. There are no specific tests to identify why it happens. Some people may have early graying, and some may have it later in their age. Again early or late is influenced by their genetics. Limited studies support that vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin B12 and biotin, can lead to premature hair graying. You may go for the same. If found deficient, go for supplements after consulting your specialist doctor. To what extent it may cause the reversal of graying hair is not certain. Considering your age of 45, I strongly presume it to be a natural age-related change.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

What are the blood tests needed for my condition? Is there any possibility that the following conditions may cause gray eyebrows?

1. Thyroid disorder.

2. Vitamin B12 deficiency.

3. Poliosis.

4. Blepharitis.

5. Genetics.

6. Hormonal issues.

7. Vitiligo.

8. Alopecia areata.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please note that graying is different than brittle hairs or hair fall. There are plenty of medical conditions where hair loss can happen. The conditions you mentioned are causes of hair loss. Poliosis is a complex disorder associated with immune-related conditions, and the tests are ordered based on an underlying suspected condition. Therefore, it is difficult to suggest a single test for your condition.

1. For thyroid, you can do a thyroid profile which includes TSH, T3, and T4.

2. For vitamin deficiency, you can check vitamin B12 levels.

3. Blepharitis is an infection of eyelashes. It needs local examination and examination of eyelash hairs under the microscope to rule out the condition.

4. Genetical tests are advanced and expensive and directed against suspected underlying conditions.

5. Vitiligo is a systemic immune condition and is a clinical diagnosis.

6. Alopecia areata is the loss of hairs and is again mostly immune-related. This is again a clinical diagnosis supported by examining the scalp under a magnifying glass.

I suggest you visit a dermatologist and get examined and start treatment accordingly.

I hope I was helpful to you.

Thank you.
