Can a wisdom tooth eruption cause gum pain and bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My gums have been hurting. Previously, they would also bleed while brushing, but the bleeding has stopped. However, the pain became worse a few days ago, so I took a painkiller, which relieved it significantly. There is still some pain in certain areas of my gums.

Could this be due to a wisdom tooth erupting, or could there be another cause?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Bleeding gums are always a sign of gum inflammation. Normal, healthy gums will not bleed while brushing.

Gum inflammation is usually caused by poor oral hygiene due to improper or insufficient brushing of the teeth. The right brushing procedure and toothbrush selection are very crucial because these are what remove the plaque deposits on the teeth, which cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums.

Regarding your wisdom tooth, you did not specifically mention whether the bleeding is from the wisdom tooth area or from the entire mouth while brushing. A wisdom tooth can cause pain and inflammation around the area where it is erupting, but it does not usually cause bleeding throughout the mouth.

A painkiller can control the pain, but the underlying cause is still present, which means there is a possibility of recurrence.

I advise you to visit your dentist, starting with a professional cleaning session, followed by proper oral hygiene instructions and a routine determined by your dentist based on the clinical examination. An X-ray will be needed to check the position and condition of the wisdom tooth.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
