Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I work in a laboratory and I got my HBS vaccine doses four years back. Yesterday, a needle got injected into my finger accidentally. I got tested for HbsAb and came out with a range of 819. Should I be worried? What to do? Can my antibody get increased without getting any additional dose? When I checked it a year back, it was around 759.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. As long as your antibody titer for HBsAb (hepatitis B surface antigen) remains more than 100, then you seem to be fully protected. There is no action required. Antibody titers can rise by themselves. I have seen it many times and nobody knows its exact reason for having it. So you are well on considering your HBsAb values. You can do tests for hepatitis C and hepatitis E after six months. You should also try to test the patient's blood to find whether she or he is HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) positive. As it happened yesterday, you are still in a time window for PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).

The Probable causes

You have a needle accident.

Investigations to be done

Try to know whether the patient is HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) positive.

Treatment plan

You need to take post-exposure prophylaxis urgently for HIV if the patient was HIV positive. Do antibody tests for hepatitis C and hepatitis E after six months.

Regarding follow up

Have a follow-up at any time.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
