Which condition would cause sensitivity to light and sound along with a headache?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 45 years old and has sensitivity to light and sound. Also I have blurry vision and headache for the past week. What could be the cause? What should I do about it? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Your symptoms are most likely due to migraines, which cause severe headaches mainly on one side that last for a few hours (up to 72 hours) and may be associated with other features like limb numbness, nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia.

The other possible causes include the following:

1. Cluster headache (with eye tears).

2. Glaucoma (with eye pain).

3. Secondary to more serious conditions.

Please provide me with more details to reach the appropriate diagnosis:

  1. Do you have a fever, red eyes, or nausea?
  2. Any muscle weakness?
  3. When was the first time you experienced this type of headache?
  4. How often do you get this headache?
  5. I would suggest the following:

    1. Tablet Paracetamol 1000 mg for the headache.

    I hope this helps.

    Thank you.
