Can I completely get rid of HBV in six months?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 28 years old. I had my blood test done last month. HBV was negative. When tested again 53 days later, it came out to be positive.

  1. Do I have acute or chronic?
  2. Is all HBV acute for the first six months?
  3. What are the chances that I will completely get rid of it within six months?

Kindly assist.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query.

If your HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) test was negative 53 days ago and has now become positive, this is suggestive of a recently acquired (acute) Hepatitis B infection.

Acute Hepatitis B is often asymptomatic, and many people are diagnosed incidentally during routine blood testing rather than because of specific symptoms. In fact, it is relatively uncommon for Hepatitis B to be identified during the acute phase.

The good news is that the majority of adults with acute Hepatitis B recover completely on their own. More than 90% of infected adults clear the virus naturally and develop immunity, while fewer than 10% progress to chronic Hepatitis B infection.

At this stage, it is important to undergo further evaluation and follow-up testing to assess the activity of the infection and monitor liver function. I recommend consulting a gastroenterologist, hepatologist, or infectious disease specialist, who can guide you regarding additional investigations, monitoring, and any treatment that may be required.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you.
