What screening tests help identify STDs at 34?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

In my teens, I used a condom that was already used by someone, lying on the street. I have done the same thrice or so. After that, I got wounds, sores, and also ulceration on my penis. The same was recurrent occasionally, and after that its occurrence was rare. Now, I am 34, and right now there are no ulcerations nor wounds, but after that incident my body became weak, and my overall growth also stopped. I am experiencing severe body pain; I feel weaker, have chest tightness, and have a burning sensation under my feet. I fear that I am infected with some STD. However, occasionally I have screened myself for VDRL, HIV, and TB, and the same was negative.

Please advise on any other STD or VD screening to be done.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your issue and understand your concern. The following are the common causes of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases):

  1. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
  2. Hepatitis B and C.
  3. Herpes.
  4. Syphilis.
  5. Chlamydia infection.

You have a negative test for HIV and syphilis. So, get tested for the hepatitis virus and for the other mentioned STDs if you are currently having an ulcer or pain in the genitourinary area.

The symptoms mentioned by you could be due to other medical conditions not related to STDs, like hypertension, diabetes, thyroid-related disorders, or vitamin B complex deficiency.

Additionally, consider a simple investigation, such as blood pressure monitoring, fasting blood sugar, and a thyroid function test. So, I recommend that (before you proceed with the investigation) you consult a doctor in person. After a physical examination, the doctor may recommend some relevant investigations alone instead of conducting multiple tests.

I hope this helps you.
