Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My uncle aged 58 years has been recently diagnosed with hepatitis C infection and is really depressed. However, he has been taking the tablet Mavyret 140 mg as suggested by his doctor. Instead of finding relief, he is facing sudden abdominal pain, along with vomiting and occasional diarrhea. Is it due to overdose or is he facing side effects of the drug? What can be done now? Should he stop taking that medicine? Are there any other ways to help him manage his symptoms? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We are elated to have you on board at icliniq.

Regarding hepatitis C, state-of-the-art medicines are available for its treatment, which are very well tolerated and have fewer side effects. The drug that you have mentioned, that is, Glecaprevir and Pibrentasvir (Mavyret) 100/40 mg is one of the best for hepatitis C treatment. Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your primary physician, because this medication is to be taken for a limited period of eight to 12 weeks and the course should be completed. Regarding his symptoms, kindly let me know if he has any drug allergies or rash. If so, ask him to stop taking the medicine. If not, then there is no need to stop.

He can take simple medications like the tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg half an hour before breakfast for abdominal pain and anti-vomiting medicine like the tablet Domperidone 10 mg half an hour before breakfast and dinner for three to five days. If symptoms persist, then visit your primary physician for physical re-evaluation and if recommended, take a blood test that includes liver function tests and a complete blood profile.

I wish him good health.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
