Patient's Query

Can you get a hernia (hiatal, etc) from one forced bowel movement (really forced) or intermittent constipation (lasts for a few weeks-2-3)? I recently had a forced bowel movement (Really bad) and immediately after I got a shoulder and neck pain (more shoulder)? Is that a cause for concern?

Hello dear. I welcome you to icliniq. Well the science and nature is quite varied and works in their own way, as far as my experience is concerned, I have not see the hernia happening from one forceful bowel movement. The constipation is not a inciting event though, it is a perpetuating event definitely. Means person who already have hernia, can cause the size of hernia increase day by day. There are various hernia in the abdomen, and one can develop any of them if chronic constipation. The shoulder pain and neck pain are non specific symptoms and does not directly point towards the diagnosis of hernia either. However, if you have established hernia already, then after a close evaluation, it may possible that they are the cause of your pain. Like hiatus hernia which is at the junction of food pipe and stomach, can develop ulcer, and subsequent pain in the chest, shoulder and back. I hope you find this explanation useful.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
