Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had to strain to have a bowel movement a few days ago. I instantly felt a lump in my throat after pushing. Can it potentially be a hiatal hernia?

Welcome to ilciniq.com.

I want to clarify that you suffer from two different conditions. First one is related to your lower gut (straining to have bowel movements) which is constipation, a second symptom which is the lump in the throat can be a symptom of hiatus hernia (one of the reasons). Check the following symptoms which usually happen with hiatus hernia,

1. Acidity increases, especially after having particular foods like fried, spicy, mint, chocolate, caffeine drinks, chili.

2. Burping.

3. Upper central abdominal pain.

4. Pain in the center of the chest, more while sleeping.

5. Prolonged unexplained coughing.

Differential diagnosis

Constipation, globus, hiatus hernia, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
