Did I get in contact with oral and genital HSV 2?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Six weeks ago, I had oral sex with my partner. We also had sex and condom broke while having sex with her. After a week, I went for a complete STD screening test and it came negative for all, including chlamydia and gonorrhea. After the results, I got stressed and I was struggling with depression because, I had mild burning and tingling sensation in the penis, rectum, lips, mouth, gums. I occasionally have small sores inside my lips and cheeks that last for two days. Again, chlamydia and gonorrhea results were negative. Currently, I am taking Fentanyl 50 mcg patches, Lyrica 200 mg, and Tramadol 50 mg twice a day. I had HSV 1 infection before 18 years. Did I get in contact with oral and genital HSV 2?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have not contacted with HSV 2 (herpes simplex virus 2). In general, HSV present with painful blistering lesions and not with mild burning or tiny lesions. The symptoms usually present in a week.

The most likely reason for your symptoms is stress. Stress and anxiety of getting the infection are resulting in the symptoms like burning on lip or tingling. These are not typically seen with HSV 2. If your partner had active lesions of HSV 2, you would have identified during oral sex. So this is also a reason, you are safe. Rest of STD screening is normal so you can be relaxed. You are totally safe.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

So, do I have HSV infection?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Again, no, they are not. The incubation period in most cases of HSV is around less than two weeks. You had contact eight weeks ago and it is very unlikely that is HSV infection. I do not think you have HSV. As discussed earlier too, HSV causes painful blistering lesions. Pain in most cases is unbearable. You have mild itching and slight pain. This is probably due to anxiety and stress and not due to HSV infection. Remain relaxed and avoid thinking about this again and again.
