Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 76 years old and generally healthy. I have been suffering from imbalanced blood pressure for years and taking a Losartan 50 mg pill once in day along with a 12.5 mg diuretic along with Omeprazole 20 mg.

Recently there has been a deterioration in the kidney data according to my nephrologist. The creatinine levels increased to 1.37 and the uric acid to 7.5 and the filtration rate is 50. I have no proteins in my urine. What treatment do you recommend to lower the creatinine?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have gone through your reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) and can understand your concern regarding your creatinine issue and filtration rate.

The value of creatinine depends on many factors like age, gender, muscle mass, and amount of protein diet. So, with age and an increase in muscle mass or protein in the diet, creatinine may also rise.

The CKD EPI equation is not the most reliable method to calculate it. If you really want to know the exact filtration rate, I would advise you to get it checked through CKD EPI CYSTAIN EQUATION, because that would be more reliable.

I suggest you follow a few instructions mentioned below which will help to maintain or stop your creatinine level from increasing.

  1. Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables in your diet which reduces kidney decline.

  2. Cut down on non-vegetarian diets, smoking, alcohol, and fatty food from the diet.

  3. Have a walk for at least 30 minutes daily.

  4. Maintain hydration, and drink at least 2.5 liters of water per day.

  5. Avoid cold drinks and any other processed food.

  6. Maintain your blood pressure as it is now.

  7. If you follow the above advice, your kidney filtration rate would not decline rapidly, but a small decline is physiological with age.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
