Can my 7-year-old son's myopia be corrected naturally?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is 7 years old with -7 power myopia. Can it be corrected naturally?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Myopia is a progressive condition, and the progression depends on the pattern of eye growth and development, which is not predicted accurately. Avoid keeping books, and mobile phones very close to the eyes while reading. Sitting very close to the TV or computer must be stopped. It is a well-known fact that near work increases the myopia progression. Keep the glasses on throughout the day except while sleeping. Young children will be susceptible to a weakness in the nerve of vision called as amblyopia. It can be easily prevented by wearing glasses and treated with patching. A low dose Atropine eye drops (0.01 %) can be used. It is recommended in high myopia and in children who seem to progress in myopia. This drug has minimal side effects, with the most important one being tachycardia and the other common one being an allergy to the medication. In case of any other doubts, please send me a picture of the glass prescription, any other investigations, and the doctor's records.
