Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have mild myopia. I have been prescribed glasses before five years. My first power was -0.25 and -0.5 dioptre. Now it is -2.5 and -3.0 dioptre. At first, my power got increased -0.5 in both eyes every six months. For the last one and a half years, it has got increased to -0.5 in both eyes. I am seeing some hope that my power will become stable and I can be able to reduce it. But I am scared as it has reached -3 in one eye and -4 is considered high myopia. Kindly answer my question. I have consulted many doctors and they told me that myopia cannot be reduced. On the other hand, I have seen people online who have a reduction in myopia in a year or two with high dedication. I also met a person who told me that his myopia was reduced. Can I try these exercises? On the other hand, I have also seen some people saying that it cannot be reduced and it increases with time. I do not want my condition to get improved. Do you recommend a method that helps in reducing myopia or to keep myopia stable? Does walking on the grass help me? Do I need to wear less than prescribed glasses? Will my eyes get adjusted to it if I use them continuously by doing exercises and eating healthy foods? Do you suggest any eye drops?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the query and I understand your concern. Myopia does not resolve and only pseudomyopia resolves. For younger children, Atropine can be used as a prophylactic treatment and it is not effective for older children or teens. Exercises are followed for hypermetropia and not for myopia. If your retina is normal, then there is nothing to be worried about when the glass number progresses a bit of 1 diopter range. Orthokeratology contact lenses are proven to modify myopia in short term. But in the long term, there is no difference seen in lens users as well as non-lens users in terms of safety and efficacy. You can try to have a laser procedure to the eyes called LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) or PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and it makes your eyes less dependent on your glasses or contacts. For now, you can manage the condition by using glasses or contact lenses and have ophthalmic checkups yearly. Walking on the grass does not help you but spending time on outdoors helps to reduce screen time. You should use full prescription glasses and you should not reduce the prescribed power. If your vision is 6/6 with glasses, then it is one of the treatment options for amblyopia and not for simple myopia.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
