What could cause high vitamin B12 levels and how to reduce them?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mom is 73 years old and is active for her age. We recently got some tests done for her, some of which are a blood sugar test, liver function test, kidney function test, and lipid profile.

All reports turned normal except for the vitamin B12 test, which is higher than normal. Her B12 was 1249 pg/mL, and her vitamin D3 is at 79 IU.

I just want to know about high B12 levels and what we do to reduce them.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Kindly get a peripheral smear for your mother to know if she has megaloblastic anemia. Usually, high levels of vitamin B12 cause polycythemia vera, joint pains, and generalized body pains.

If she is having a complete blood picture of the same, then she can be treated accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
