What are the chances of getting HIV after protected sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had sex with a condom. Is there any chance of getting affected by HIV? Until now, there have been no symptoms. Generally, how many days will it take to identify HIV after sex? Please suggest, and I am a bit worried.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Having sex with a condom is generally safe and provides strong protection against HIV, as long as the condom is used properly and does not tear or leak during intercourse. The risk of transmission in such cases is extremely low. A key consideration is whether your partner was already diagnosed to be HIV positive at the time of the encounter or tested positive later. This can help assess your level of exposure risk more clearly. If you have already undergone an HIV test and it came back negative, especially if it was done four to eight weeks after the incident, there is usually no reason to worry.

Most modern HIV tests are highly accurate within this window. However, HIV symptoms, if they do occur, can vary significantly and may be delayed. Symptoms may take years, sometimes even over a decade, in some individuals, depending on immune function and other health factors. If you have not yet been tested and are feeling uncertain, it is advisable to take an HIV test to clear your doubts. Testing is quick, reliable, and confidential. Whether or not your partner was diagnosed as HIV positive, it’s always important to practice safe sex and take proper precautions for your health.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The company conducts general medical tests that include blood tests. In that report, HIV is negative. I do not know about that partner's health condition right now. Are there any home tests? Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, there is no home test for HIV. And since your HIV test is negative that you have already done. You do not have to worry at all. And since you are already negative, your partner status does not matter for you today. So just relax.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your report. The report you have attached is nonreactive for HIV. That means it is negative for HIV. So just relax and stay calm. You need not worry about it as the report is negative.

I hope this helps.
