Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Can I get HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) from a bite? I am an engaged guy and have never cheated on my woman. But three days ago, I went out with a friend who was with his girlfriend. Her friend also came along with us. We went to have a drink, and the other girl who came with us got drunk. So I went to drop her off, and while I was driving, she bit my shoulder, saying she likes me. I started shouting at her because it was not normal, and I felt very bad. I dropped her off and went back home.
The bite was so bad that it had gone through my shirt, and her teeth marks were there on my skin, which was looking red with blood present on it. I feel bad and want to test for HIV, as I heard she has always had multiple partners. But I feel it is too soon to do the test now. Will I get HIV from the bite? I came to know that there are at least four proven cases of HIV transmission through a bite.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am here to give you the best care possible. Yes, theoretically, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can be secreted in saliva. If the bite is deep and bloody, you can acquire HIV by this route. But in your case, the virus getting inoculated in the blood and tissues through the clothes seems unlikely. If you are still apprehensive, kindly get yourself tested.
I hope this has helped you.
Thank you.
