Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had hypothyroidism. Since I was 13 years old, and most recent blood tests revealed a 7.33 mU/L TSH level. I started taking Thyroxine tablets four years back but want to switch to Kelp supplements. Is it advisable? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Thyroid patients should not manage their condition through diet. The use of kelp as a therapy is not recommended. In dietary form, kelp intake should be in the range of 0.154 to 0.175 mg RDA (recommended daily allowance) as food content only. It should not be taken in capsular form as it can be dangerous. Please continue to take your thyroxine tablets only for hypothyroidism. Your TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is slightly high, so I suggest you take it early morning upon waking up and then take your breakfast after one hour. Secondly, if doing likewise, then the dose of thyroxine needs to be slightly increased. Since you have not mentioned the daily dose of thyroxine, I cannot suggest an increment dose.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
