Can hypothyroidism be treated completely?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old male and a hypothyroid patient for the last three years. Is there any way to fix my thyroid and stop the medication? Currently, my medication is just replacing my thyroid and not fixing my glands in any way.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and from what you mentioned it appears that you have hypothyroidism and you want to cure it without medications. Well to be very clear there is a problem that your thyroids are not functioning properly and there is no way to make them as they were before or as in people without hypothyroidism. All we can do is replace the deficient hormones because of an underactive thyroid. In some patients, the thyroid gland is affected by the immune system of their own body which destroys their tissues, for example, the thyroid in your case. All you can do is help your body by de-stressing by way of yoga or meditation, sleeping on time and enough, and being as relaxed as possible. Although this might help by preventing further worsening of your present condition, it will not cure you completely. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
