Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the end of last year. I have been taking Levothyroxine for the last two months. Due to some other health issue, I discontinued taking the medicine and delayed going back to my endocrinologist. I noticed that I gained 10 to 12 pounds in the last two weeks. Should I start taking Levothyroxine today or wait for the doctor's approval to take the medicine again or get a test done before?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From what you have mentioned, it appears that your weight gain is due to hypothyroidism. Although it is recommended that you do the thyroid function test and then start with your Levothyroxine. But since you are eager to start the treatment right away, then you can start with the same dose that you initially took. Still, you should do your thyroid function test as soon as possible.

I hope you find my advice of some benefit.

Thank you.
