Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am worried about a parent whose child tried the popular choking game. They used a tie to go around their neck a few times. She told me the child did not pass out and continued to breathe when the cord was around their neck. Breathing was constricted, not as deep as when they would typically be able to breathe, and on the last attempt, they got dizzy and remained out of it for a few hours afterward. She is now concerned about brain damage, as the child lacks memory, and judgment seems to be extremely off. Could there have been possible permanent damage done? Does hypoxia only occur if breathing is completely cut off?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Hypoxia to the brain occurs when breathing is completely stopped for a few minutes. There are signs and symptoms of hypoxia brain injury, and in that case, walking, eating, and almost every other daily activity will be affected. The judgment will be affected for a few days because of the temporary stunning of neurons. In case of permanent brain damage child will not eat and drink on their own so please discourage them from any such activities in the future. He will be fine in a couple of days from now.
