Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had sex with my girlfriend during her period using condoms, but it broke. She took a contraceptive pill (I-pill) after three hours. Now it is more than a week. Is it necessary for bleeding to occur after one week of taking the contraceptive pill? I am scared. Please answer.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

If the condom breaks during intercourse, there is a risk of pregnancy. However, your girlfriend did the right thing by taking an emergency contraceptive pill, such as I-pill (Levonorgestrel), within three hours of the incident. Emergency contraceptive pills delay ovulation and prevent fertilization or implantation of the fertilized egg. It is not necessary for bleeding to occur after taking emergency contraceptive pills, as the hormones in the pill can affect the menstrual cycle and cause irregular bleeding. Some women may experience bleeding or spotting after taking the pill while others may not. It is also worth noting that the timing and duration of bleeding after taking emergency contraceptive pills can vary from person to person. However, if your girlfriend's period is delayed by more than a week or if she experiences other symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or breast tenderness, she should take a pregnancy test (which will probably be negative).

Feel free to contact me for further queries.

Regards.
