Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend is 40 years old, he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease recently. He has been experiencing recurrent abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue for two months. Could you please provide an overview of inflammatory bowel disease, including the different types (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), their clinical presentations, and potential complications? What are the common risk factors associated with developing IBD? What diagnostic tests are most reliable and effective in confirming the diagnosis of IBD? What are the available treatment options for IBD?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to iciniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Crohn's disease affects the entire large bowel while ulcerative colitis affects commonly the rectosigmoid region. Abdominal pains, and bloody diarrhea, are complications of colorectal cancer. The common risk factors associated with developing IBD are infections, deficiencies, etc. The diagnostic tests that are most reliable and effective in confirming the diagnosis of IBD are abdominal X-rays and rectal biopsy. The treatment options for IBD include Mesalamine tablets, 150mg taken orally twice a day (PO bid), among others, and in some cases, surgery.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
