Patient's Query

Dear Doctor,

My 5 year old daughter suffering from fever with running nose since 10 days now. After giving Augmentin, she is having loose stool almost 10 times a day, watery with mucus.

What to do?

Hi,

Thanks for posting query on icliniq.

Let me explain about pathophysiology about your child's illness:

1) After reading the description of your query, it seems that initially your child had viral illness that is common due to change of season. You do not need to give antibiotic for this; but you have given Augmentin. Anyways that is not the issue right now.

2) Now your baby had loose stool with mucous and pain in abdomen. It indicates infective diarrhea (Not diarrhea due to Augmentin -- that would be painless and no mucous).

Now let me discuss about treatment plan of your child:

  • Ensure hydration, give her ORS solution (dissolved 1 packet in 1 litre of water). She must take 150 to 200 ml of this solution after each loose stool. This ORS contain electrolytes that has lost by stool. Give it till loose stool subsides.
  • Give her OFLOXACIN syrup (5 ml=200mg) 5ml once a day for 10 days by mouth. Stop Augmentin (No role in this case)
  • Syrup Zinc-20 5ml once a day for 14 days, it will fulfill Zn defficiency in your child and prevent further episodes of diarrhea and pneumonia also.
  • Give her semi-solid food more along with CURD (this will help to improve digestion).
  • During this illness watch for any color change in urine output, this is the danger sign indicating dehydration in your child and needs aggressive treatment.
  • Give her multivitamin supplement (Syrup Entiquity 5 ml once a day).

If any time deterioration occurs, contact for admission in nearest hospital.

Hope your baby will be fine in next 48 hours. Take care of your daughter and revert back to a paediatrician online --> https://www.icliniq.com/ask-a-doctor-online/paediatrician
