How to deal with IBS-related flatulence in social situations?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am suffering from a severe gas problem. I suspect irritable bowel syndrome to be the cause. Once, I checked it with a doctor, who confirmed it and advised me to consult a gastroenterologist. Whatever I eat, I constantly pass gas.

Additionally, even when I am not passing gas, I still smell bad, making me uncomfortable because it always makes others itch their nose when they approach me. I want to get rid of this smell, at least.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

To rule out any organic causes of your disease, I advise you to get an abdominal ultrasonography. Gas can be treated using sachets or tablets that contain Simethicone. Functional bowel issues like irritable bowel syndrome may develop if you are under too much stress.

Eat slowly and avoid smoking. Eat more foods that contain fiber. Strictly avoid cabbage, cauliflower, and so on, as they form gas. Consult a gastroenterologist, discuss with them, and take the medication with their consent.

I hope this helps you.

Please follow up for further assistance.

Thank you.
