My doctor prescribed Dogmatil 50 mg for IBS. Should I be taking it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have mild lower abdominal pain with back pain and pressure on the bladder. My doctor diagnosed my condition as IBS after doing a CT scan, urine test, stool test, and blood test. All the results were normal. The doctor advised me to take two medicines. He told me to take Duspatalin 200 mg twice daily and Dogmatil 50 mg twice daily. I read about the side effects of Dogmatil 50 mg. I got scared due to it. Do I need to take Dogmatil 50 mg?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Dogmatil is not used in cases of irritable bowel syndrome. It is effective in a person having upper gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, stomach fullness, and belching. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is a problem affecting small and large bowel and it does not affect the stomach. As you do not have any stomach involvement, I suggest you stop taking Dogmatil (Sulpiride). Duspatalin (Mebeverine hydrochloride) can be used and it is well-tolerated among IBS patients. It is basically an antispasmodic agent and it reduces pain. But it can cause constipation.
