Is jaw pain and gum blisters normal after dental treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had recently undergone dental treatment like fillings and deep cleaning, for which I had to keep my mouth open for a long time. Now I have jaw tenderness and blisters on my gums and on the part of the mouth where the dentist was working. Is this normal?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Do you have any known allergies? Any history of previous dental treatment? Jaw tenderness could be from the extensive dental treatment and long-time mouth opening. If it hurts a lot, over-the-counter painkillers like the tablet Paracetamol will help to control pain. On the other hand, the blisters could be due to traumatic ulcers caused during treatment, an allergy to any of the dental materials used, or the latex in the dentist's gloves, which is common.

I would suggest getting back to the dentist and examining your multiple ulcers to know what caused them.

Meanwhile, I would suggest,

  1. Avoid hot and spicy foods.
  2. Do warm saline mouth rinses thrice daily.
  3. Rinse your mouth after every meal.
  4. Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated.

Maintaining good oral hygiene and following the above-said instructions will prevent further infection of the ulcer and promotes faster healing. If required, if it hurts, a topical anesthetic like Orajel (Benzocaine) can be applied over the ulcer with a clean finger.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
