Is labiaplasty under sedation safe with alcohol consumption?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am having a labiaplasty under conscious sedation. It is a simple procedure with minimal risk, but I need a second opinion on the anesthesia used because I have a history of alcohol abuse (nothing major).

I am 26 years old, and over the past year, I have drunk every other day (six drinks on average). I stopped a couple of days ago because of my surgery. I just want to know if using anesthetics is safe for me. I am already on a Benzodiazepine (Clonazepam) daily, and I am not feeling any withdrawal from alcohol. I am just a little anxious about the fact that I have been drinking for a while. My blood work came out fine, and my liver function is good. What is your professional opinion?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You can continue your Clonazepam tablet. As you are a chronic alcoholic get your liver function tests done, and there is nothing to worry about the procedural anesthesia. Tell your alcoholic and medication history to your anesthesiologist.

The analgesic dosage requirement may be slightly higher, but nothing to worry about as that may be already taken care of by your anesthetist. Keep your hydration adequate by intake of fluids. Six hours of fasting for both liquids and solids is mandatory before anesthesia. Do not worry and have safe anesthesia.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

My liver function results came back normal. And my surgeon knows that I have a higher tolerance to sedatives or anesthesia. I will keep myself hydrated. Is there anything else I should keep in mind? Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is nothing much left to worry about. Just be calm and leave your worries to your anesthetist. Take a good sleep night before the procedure. You will do absolutely fine.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
