Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am having a labiaplasty under conscious sedation. It is a simple procedure with minimal risk but I need a second opinion on the anesthesia used because I have a history of alcohol abuse (nothing major). I am 26 years old, and over the past year, I have drunk every other day (six drinks on average). I stopped a couple of days ago because of my surgery. I just want to know if using anesthetics is safe on me. I am already on a benzodiazepine (Clonazepam) daily and I am not feeling any withdrawal from alcohol. I am just a little anxious about the fact that I had been drinking for a while. My blood work came out fine and my liver function is good. What is your professional opinion?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You can continue your Clonazepam tablet. As you are chronic alcoholic get your liver function tests done and there is nothing to worry about the procedural anesthesia. Tell your alcoholic and medication history to your anesthesiologist. The analgesic dosage requirement may be slightly higher but nothing to worry as that may be already taken care by your anesthetist. Keep your hydration adequate by intake of fluids. Six hours fasting for both liquids and solids is mandatory before anesthesia. Do not worry and have a safe anesthesia.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My liver function results came back normal. And my surgeon knows that I have a higher tolerance to sedatives or anesthesia. I will keep hydrated. Is there anything else I should keep in mind?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is nothing much left to worry about. Just be calm and leave your worries to your anesthetist. Take a good sleep night before the procedure. You will do absolutely fine.
