My bottom teeth have receded. How can I fix this without a gum graft?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The dentist said I should get my bottom two front teeth looked at by a periodontal expert but I wanted to get a second opinion first. My bottom teeth have receded due to having a tongue ring previously. How can I fix this without doing a bridge and gum grafting? The doctor also said that gum grafting does not always work. Should I continue to gloss and brush gently? I feel it is getting crooked due to other teeth pushing them in. It has just been getting worse over the past two to five years.

Kindly advice.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and here is what I suggest you. It is not necessary to pull your teeth out but you need to have your tongue ring removed. The probable cause for your problem may be a mechanical recession by the tongue ring. The probable diagnosis can be localized periodontitis. You then need to have your teeth cleaned by hand scaling and cleaning after every two weeks. Use an ultra-soft toothbrush for that period so that your gingival tissue will regenerate and cover a greater portion of your teeth. Get this procedure done as it is your alternative, but you need to visit a dentist for this. I suggest you take a chlorhexidine gluconate chip once a week. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. It is treatable. Do not worry about it. It requires good oral hygiene so it will be fine. Kindly stop using the tongue ring. Follow up every 15 days.

I hope this helps.
