What causes rapid heart rate and shortness of breath?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old and have recently been suffering from shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, and loss of appetite. I visited the hospital, but they said it was just an anxiety attack. But for the last two nights, I have been waking up in the middle of the night with severe chest pain and an inability to breathe. These episodes last for three hours. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query. I understand your concern.

Your symptoms could be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease, thyroid dysfunction, anxiety, etc. I want to review your cardiac ultrasound report. So, I suggest you undergo an ambulatory 24 to 48 hours of ECG (echocardiogram) monitoring to investigate arrhythmia. In addition, undergo a chest X-ray, pulmonary function tests, and check thyroid hormone levels.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
