Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My father has been suffering from hearing loss due to Amikacin injection. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Before confirming the cause of hearing loss, it is important to rule out other potential causes. It would be helpful to know how many doses of aminoglycosides your father has taken and the severity of his hearing loss. Does he experience any tinnitus or reeling sensation? A report of audiometry would be beneficial in understanding the extent of the hearing loss and whether he can still understand and discriminate speech.

Aminoglycoside-induced ototoxicity is known to damage the hair cells in the inner ear, which can lead to irreversible sensorineural deafness. The risk of ototoxicity increases with a higher amount of the drug in the body, longer duration of drug intake, and certain genetic factors. However, with minimal exposure and doses, the hearing loss may be temporary and can reverse over time as the drug clears from the body. Immediate withdrawal of the drug is crucial in such cases.

For severe and permanent damage, cochlear implants may be considered as a treatment option. Before confirming drug-induced hearing loss, it is essential to rule out other potential causes. If any reports have already been conducted, please share them for a better evaluation. If not, a pure tone audiometry and speech discrimination test can help confirm the presence of sensorineural hearing loss.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Yes, Amikacin has been confirmed as the cause of hearing loss. My father had 28 Amikacin 500 mg injection. He feels like having tinnitus while using earphones. When my father had urine culture, the result came out as positive. So, the doctor prescribed Amikacin 500 mg injection. After some days, my father started complaining of hearing problem. We visited an ENT specialist and got it confirmed due to Amikacin injections. I have attached all the reports.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. The reports have confirmed bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, which is likely explained by the use of Amikacin. Unfortunately, it is important to note that in the majority of cases, hearing loss caused by aminoglycosides tends to be permanent. As an initial step, a hearing aid trial can be attempted to assess the response. However, if the response is minimal or absent, cochlear implants may be necessary for corrective measures to address the hearing loss.
