Is there any chance for pregnancy even after taking Depo shot?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I started the Depo shot before six months and I missed my second shot. I did not continue getting the shot, so I have been off birth control. It was my first Depo shot I have ever received and I am not sure how long it takes to be totally gone. But, I have been very sexually active with my boyfriend for the past few months. I have not started my period as I got the shot. Yesterday, I bled very lightly, but only for a couple of hours and then it stopped completely. I am wondering if this could be implantation bleeding? I have had a couple of bad headaches recently, but do not feel as crampy as I do when I am on a normal period. I was wondering that any chances to become pregnant or not. But I have not noticed any morning sickness or weird cravings. Please suggest me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is a high chance of pregnancy. You can confirm or rule out the same with a simple home pregnancy test. The effect of a single depot of 150 mg lasts for three to four months. It means you are not protected against pregnancy in the last two months. If the pregnancy test comes negative, then you can wait for your menses for a week and repeat HPT (home pregnancy test). You need to consult your doctor if the second pregnancy test too comes negative. In case of positive pregnancy test, if you do not wish to continue the pregnancy, then you have an option of medical abortion.
